Objection to Kushwant Singh’s truly illogical view on Hijab

Mr. Kushwant Singh projected such an illogical, irrational and baseless argument on Deccan Chronicle on 14th Feb, 2010 headlined "Hijab as emblem of backwardness". I would like to have the wise readers to judge between the bogus and real arguments.
Here's his goofy thoughts http://bit.ly/cmjaPO
Objection
Mr. Khushwant Singh rather appeared to be emotional than portraying the situation on a factual base. One got to
understand the difference among viel, hijab, parda and Burqa. Viel is the face garment used to cover the face
however Hijab is the basic constraint of the dressing for women in Islam which is never made mandatory to woman. A woman
is expected to cover her body except her forearm and face. However, she is allowed to wear it if she feel that she would be
commented on or teased.
This is absolutely is unfair the DC published these sort of illogical articles that are gushed out of the proportion and wisdom, but just the emotional ground.
I would like to urge Mr. Kushwant Singh to explain logically and rationally that how would wearing the Hijab pull a society
backward and not wearing the head garment would empower the Muslim women? illiteracy is backwardness and that's caused
Muslims to stay backward. Don't try to divert the issue for your personal interest. One got to be impartial and
non-prejudistic while analyzing a matter. There are enormous number of women wearing head garment around the Globe
who're on the mainstream. Why are you biased, excited and obsessed with the Muslims? Are there not Nuns and Saints who
cover their hair? Sikh women do wear head scarf as per their testaments. Would you dare to tell that Sonia Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and our president Prathibha Patil who wear the headgear always are backward and heading the society to backwardness? Be rational, logical and truthful to your comments.
Sikh men, Arabs, Afghan men etc wear headgarment; would you dare to tell that covering their hair would pull them
backward? How does it make sense logically and rationally that it would make difference only to women? Why are you and
other naive intolerants so excited to see Muslim women's hair? One got to understand it with sports man spirit that it's a
custom or regulation followed by a region or religion and doesn't have to be obsessed with it for no aparent reason
whatsoever.
A true follower has to be strict on his belief no matter which religion he follows and that's not bigot. You got to understand
its meaning. A true believer cannot be a intolerant with other religious. That sort of inclination is not taught by Islam. Islam
clearly preaches to respect other religions. Learn Islam from its testaments, not looking at the Arabic named people around.
A true believer of Islam is against the intolerant people who pull the people backward like Taliban. We're completely against
them as it's purely way out of Islamic perspective.
According to the Islamic perspective, Pakistan or Bangadesh is not following Islam where as they are democratic countries
which Mr. Singh has deliberately forgotten. Having named in Arabic doesn't mean that one is following Islam. Covering the
nudity properly is the simple of modest and dignity, not the other way around. If one thinks like uncovering the nudity would
give one dignity and modesty, I would place the person out of context at all because he clearly has some other interests.
Islam instructed Men to put their eyes down to earth after the first look at the woman which is to recognize and has
instructed woman to put down her cloak covering the chest in order to avoid the indecent looks from men around which is
evolved by a natural tendency. The so called celebrities, promiscuous or slut wouldn't want to cover their body as they need to
be marketed according to their body figure and men thoroughly enjoy them too.
Rather than just gushing and portraying Wahabi as a barbarian, try to learn from the History that the so called person has
worked a lot to reform the soceity from the superstition and empower them according to Islamic perspective. On the
contrary, as per your claims, the Africans who are not used to cover their nudity properly would have been on the verge of
growth and empowerment.
You should rather be worried that why the divorce rate is going up? Why the rate of the parents sent to the old age homes
are going up? If you analyze it, you would get to understand that reduction in the values have caused these sort of social
problems for which the truly religious adherence is the way out. Being a bigot or intolerance would not make this happen,
but true belief. You can see the contagious diseases such AIDS, syphilis as a result of the animal-life style.

Jathmalani's Poor Knowledge of History

The news came out with reference to Ram Jethmalani is a clear example of a loose talk by the former Union Law Minister and senior lawyer. His comment is evidently an amalgam of factual errors and logical flaws. Addicted to the propaganda of Western anti-Wahabi slogans, he couldn't even pronounce the exact name of the islamic revivalist, as Jathmalani said he is Wahab instead of the actual name Muhammed Ibn Abdul-Wahhab;Abul Wahab is the name of his father. The ongoing 'intellectual' discussion of the West on 'Wahabi fundamentalism' might have misled the senior advocate. Another big blunder is regarding the time of Mohammed Ibn Abdul-Wahhab: he lived in the 18th century, not in the 17th century as reported.

Historically speaking, Mohammed Ibn Abdul-Wahhab did not preach extremism or religious hatred. His mission was to rectify the Muslims who resorted to non-Islamic extreme ideologies. He brought back the people from religious tyranny and stopped all means of religious exploitations that prevailed during the time of Turks in Arabian peninsula. This is the reason why he is still opposed by the Muslim clergy who run religious tomb business all over the world. Western vested interests oppose him because of his struggles to retain the Islamic ideology preached by Prophet Mohammed, and not to let Islam misinterpreted. Another reason stems from the fact that many third world countries, including India, witnessed strong support of the so called Wahabbis in destabilizing the colonial rules. So colonial historians made deliberate attempts to defame 'Wahabis" while writing history and many are still destined to internalize such flaws, Ram Jathmalani is no exception.

Logically speaking, as a nation, Saudi Arabia cannot support any kind of extremism or terrorism, as it itself is a victim of terrorism. Jathmalani's statement came just after the clash between the Yemeni extremist rebels and Saudi forces in the southern region of Jizan. If you see the past of two decades, you can observe a lot of measures taken by the Saudi government to tackle religious extremism and terrorism. Even western leadrs have praised Saudi government for its success in combating terrorism. The author of this note can present a lot publications written by Saudi Muslim Scholars and circulated by the Saudi Ministry of religious affairs, calling for religious moderation and negation of extremism and terrorism.

These evidences show Ram Jathmalani's poor knowledge of Islamic history and a superficial analysis of the most successful lawyer of the largest democracy in the world. His statement might have achieved some points politically, but reasonably capable of offending a friendly country that welcomes thousands of Indian expatriates like me. One again it is proven that a person who shared the cabinet with Murali Manohar Joshi can't make a better historic analysis.

Love Jihad - Further reading

‘Love Jihad’ is the most recent coinage on the air for the few weeks in Kerala. The contemporary scenario in the most literate state of India shows how desperate the forces of islamophobia are in their unscrupulous attempts to defame Islam and Muslims. ‘Jihad’ has been one of the most misunderstood words in the contemporary world. Now the word has been beautifully prefixed by Sangh Parivar and co., to intensify islamophobia in a comparatively harmonious Kerala.
‘Love Jihad’ is the imaginary organization, first appeared as a product of creative journalism in a reportedly secular Kalakaumudi Weekly. As its media creator hypothesizes, the objective of this organization is to trap non-Muslim girls in the web of love in order to convert them into Islam. As per the ‘investigative’ report published in Kalakaumudi, this organization is using a group of young Muslim boys, and they are instructed to lure girls of other religions. They have to love girls of a certain religion within the time frame of 2 weeks and brainwash them to get converted and marry within 6 weeks. Special instructions to breed at least 4 kids have also been given! If the target won’t get trapped within first 2 weeks, they are instructed to leave them and move to another girl!!
The hypotheses continue; the money for this organization comes from foreign countries. This organization has started its move in Kerala for the last one year. Modern gadgets like Free Mobile Phones, Bikes and Fashionable dresses are given to the recruits as tool for the mission. The writer is systematic in his attempt to provide the statistics of ‘love converts’ to support his argument. Later on, the stories have been taken by Sangh Parivar and their media well wishers.
Such stories won’t surprise Muslims who are used to these. In this case, Kalakaumudi’s may have a hidden agenda to revive its lost circulation. This is yet another example of substandard journalism at the cost of an already oppressed community.
The origin of these stories traces back to a campus love at St John's Business School in Pathanamthitta, the hilly eastern district of Kerala. The hero in the story is Shahan Sha, a smart MBA student. He was active in campus politics and was the of the office bearer of Muslim Students Federation (MSF), the Indian Union Muslim League's student wing. He also led agitations in the college demanding facilities that were mentioned in the prospectus. Confrontations between Sha and the college management led his parents to send him for a short religious course. He returned a changed man and spent more time on studies than organizational activities. Sha also became intimate with two juniors; Methula, a Hindu girl, and Bino Joseph, a Christian. Soon, he and Methula fell in love while Bino found a partner in Sirajudeen, Sha's friend. The girls' parents came to know about the affair and brought them home. However, they escaped, converted to Islam and married their lovers. The families filed habeas corpus petitions in the high court. But the girls told the court they had converted without coercion and wanted to live with their husbands. Despite the plea, the judge asked the girls, well above 18 years of age, to stay with their parents and convince them about their marriages. But the twist in the tale came in the next hearing; the girls told the court that they would prefer living with their parents instead of their husbands. The police said in their report they suspected an organization called Love Jihad/ Romeo Jihad was functioning in the state. The high court further directed the Kerala Police and the Union Home Ministry to probe the alleged movement. The court also asked the state and the centre to look into sources that fund the Love Jihad, the number of girls who have got “trapped in the racket” in the past three years and its extremist links, if any. This controversial direction came from Justice K.T. Sankaran who was hearing the bail application the two youths.
The news brought pro-Hindu groups on the streets. They alleged that the conversion movement had been going on for years and thousands of Hindu girls had been converted to Islam this way. The groups organized protest marches and agitations. It is interesting to note that they were joined by the church, which has been alleged by Sangh Parivar for forced conversions. Kerala Catholic Bishop Council warned the laity to protect their daughters from Love Jihad. They said it was part of an international conspiracy to increase the Muslim population and that extremist organizations were also involved. Interestingly, the theory seems to have now been accepted by Karnataka too, where even the courts are convinced that the movement exists. Dissatisfied on Kerala DGP’s report that denies existence of such an organization, the high court directed DGP Jacob Punnose to produce reports by November 11 in a sealed cover on the basis of which he had prepared the report. All marriages between Muslim youths and Hindu/ Christian girls are now being branded as the result of Love Jihad's campaign.
Backed by two high courts, the Sangh Parivar is set to fish in the mud water. This Parivar-Church coalition to fight an hypothetical organization can create far reaching significances in the socio-religious arena of Kerala. All these come from the false notion that Islam’s strength lies in the number of its followers. As Islam doesn’t believe in forced conversions and using cheap means to attract people, the terms like Love Jihad are just hallucinations of new age islamophobia. The universality of Islamic principles is substantial enough to accept the challenges of all ages, and it is the fastest growing religion even in the western world. It is high time that the proponents of such Love Jihad theory should understand the history and principles of Islam with non-prejudiced heart.
